Luigi Tenco (21 March 1938 – 27 January 1967) was an Italian singer, songwriter. After his alleged suicide, he became an icon of love and despair. The true causes of his death have not yet been agreed upon. Tenco was born in Cassine (province of Alessandria) in 1938, the son of Teresa Zoccola and Giuseppe Tenco. He never knew his father, who died in unclear circumstances. It has been rumored that Luigi Tenco was the fruit of an extramarital relationship of his mother.

Luigi Tenco (March 21, 1938 – January 27, 1967) was a popular Italian singer, songwriter and actor. He committed suicide (there are of course the usual conspiracy theories) the night he and Dalida, the famous Italian-Egyptian singer, who was also his partner, were eliminated from the prestigious (at the time) San Remo Festival, when the song "Ciao amore ciao" didn't make it to the final.

Luigi Tenco is doubtless one of the most tragic and misunderstood figures in the history of Italian pop music. Largely ignored - when not openly criticized - during his life, after his suicide he became the object of a posthumous cult that transformed him into an icon of despair and angst. The song was later included, along with "Un Giorno Dopo l'Altro" and a new version of "Vedrai, Vedrai," on the album Tenco.

Italian singer-songwriter Luigi Tenco's dark, brooding eyes and matinee idol looks masked a tortured soul. His untimely death in 1967, at age 29, spawned a cult around his intense and intimately-personal songs that survives to this day. Luigi Tenco was found dead in his room at the Hotel Savoy in the early hours of 27 January. His life ended with a single gunshot to the head - just hours after his song 'Ciao, Amore Ciao' had been voted out of the Festival di Sanremo, the most prestigious music event in Italy and a precursor to the Eurovision Song Contest. More recently, Steven Brown, co-founder of cult band Tuxedo Moon, released a rather earnest cover album called Brown Plays Tenco. But, thankfully, Tenco has evaded the plague of Anglo half-wits looking to shore up their hipster credentials by murdering someone else's canon.
