La sonnambula (The Sleepwalker) is an opera semiseria in two acts, with music in the bel canto tradition by Vincenzo Bellini set to an Italian libretto by Felice Romani, based on a scenario for a ballet-pantomime written by Eugène Scribe and choreographed by Jean-Pierre Aumer called La somnambule, ou L'arrivée d'un nouveau seigneur.

La Sonnambula is one of Vincenzo Bellini's finest operas because of it's strong character. The melodies and orchestra accompniament have a distinct whimsical, pastoral flavor entirely appropriate for the setting of a rural, country village. I'm afraid I was not too taken by Leonard Bernstien's conducting as some of the critics seem to be. To me, it lacks subtlety. When he's slow he's REALLY, REALLY slow and when he's fast, he's REALLY, REALLY fast. Track list identifies main singers but omits timings. It marked the second occasion in which Callas and Leonard Bernstein worked together in an opera house.

File:Maria Callas (La Traviata) . PG. Maria Callas as Violetta in La traviata, 1958. Maria Callas, Commendatore OMRI (Greek: Μαρία Κάλλας; December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977), was a Greek-American soprano, and one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations. Although her dramatic life and personal tragedy have often overshadowed Callas the artist in the popular press, her artistic achievements were such that Leonard Bernstein called her "the Bible of opera" and her influence so enduring that, in 2006, Opera News wrote of her: "Nearly thirty years after her death, she's still the definition of the diva as.
