It was released by Epic Records on August 31, 1992 in the UK, and March 29, 1993 in the US, as the fifth single from Jackson's eighth studio album, Dangerous (1991). Released by MJJ Music on October 26, 2009, This Is It features previously released music, as well as six previously unreleased recordings by Michael Jackson. This Is It was released to coincide with the theatrical release of Michael Jackson's This Is It, a concert film documenting Michael Jackson's rehearsals for the This Is It concert series at the O2 Arena in London.

The music video for the song was directed by a young David Fincher, who would go on to direct films such as Fight Club, Zodiac and The Social Network.

Michael Jackson was badly injured while filming a commercial for PepsiCo in 1984, suffering burns to his face and scalp. Jackson had surgery to repair his injuries and is believed to have begun experimenting with plastic surgery around this time.
