Richard Hamilton & Dieter Roth - "Collaborations" Readings flac album

Catalogues like this are documents of ideas as well as an exhibition. Interesting to know that Richard Hamilton initiated correspondence with Dieter Roth, and that this correspondence grew to collaboration. But, I wonder, if the two artists pretty much kept their own strong identities during the collaborations themselves. Maybe this is always how it is?

Richard William Hamilton CH (24 February 1922 – 13 September 2011) was an English painter and collage artist.

Richard Hamilton first made contact with Dieter Roth in 1961, having seen some of his books the previous year. From then until Roth’s death in 1998, the two artists collaborated on numerous projects as well as developing a close friendship based on mutual admiration for each other’s work. Their personalities and approaches to art were in many ways totally different, but this, no doubt, was part of the attraction. Roth recalled: ‘I’m always so speedy and Richard does things very slowly and thinks things over. It was the best time of my life. Seminar was one of many collaborations between Roth and Richard Hamilton. Roth began the process by making one lithographic plate, to which Hamilton responded by adding another layer from a new plate. Neither told the other of their plans or identified their interventions. The exchange eventually resulted in nine plates being used. The artists' working methods were quite distinct. Roth recalled: ‘I’m always so speedy and Richard does things very slowly and thinks things over. Gallery label, March 2007.
