Return of Cyril Diaz sees the 50's bandleader play the roots music of his Afro-Venezuelan parentage. His father Gordon Diaz migrated to Trinidad sometime in the early 1900's. Throughout the 1950's Cyril Diaz and his big band calypso orchestra toured the Caribbean and South America recording culturally inspired hybrid calypsos with an african and latin tinge. Diaz and his orchestra were the top calypso players of the era; in fact, Diaz regularly provided accompaniment to the recordings of star calypsonians such as Mighty Sparrow, Lord Melody, or Young Killer. In the early 1960s, Diaz moved away from Trinidad to Toronto, where he started playing in nightclubs and eventually established his own school of music. It’s worth noting that Diaz’s arrangement of 'Tabú', composed in 1934 by the Cuban Margarita Lecuona, was the one that ultimately led to the Gaylads' hit 'Africa (We Want to Go)'. Serenal' and its alternate, 'Chive Soup Merengue', are both derived from Trinidad’s traditional folk music, parang; around Christmas time, it was habitual for parang serenaders to visit the homes of their families and neighbors in the middle of the night and carol them until dawn.
