Shock City Maverick, unfortunately, fails to carry Now's momentum. Instead, the new full-length is yet another wait-and-see moment. Maverick has a more consistent tone than either of Beans' previous records, but it also lacks the stand-outs of its predecessors, settling into bland production strokes that recede behind his always fascinating rhymes. On highlights like "Papercut", Beans augments his verbal barrage with steel-tight wirescapes.

Nothing scrambles the brain like Tomorrow Right Now's "Hot Venom," and no track has lyrics that hit as hard as Now, Soon, Someday's "Win or Lose You Lose," but the album maintains a consistency that neither of those releases can claim. His flow remains unique, and he has the odd contradictions to match.

The opening to Beans' latest album "Shock City Maverick" got us kinda excited - "Light of the Damned" features some demented Rave hoover sweeps, all low-light Kaman Leung styles in that freaked-out warehouse slow motion jacking mode we're so into nonetheless, its actually a fairly tight affair
