Mariner is a collaborative studio album between the Swedish band Cult of Luna and the American vocalist Julie Christmas, formerly of the bands Made Out of Babies and Battle of Mice. Serving as Cult of Luna's seventh studio album and the first time Christmas has appeared on the entirety of a full-length album since her 2010 solo debut The Bad Wife, Mariner was released on April 8, 2016 through Indie Recordings

The careful and thoughtful sludge of Cult of Luna paired with Julie's edgy vocals make for an incredibly moving combination. The build of layers at the end of Cygnus is second to none and literally chokes me up with its intensity every damn time. The energy is literally palpable. Give it the attention it deserves, and you will be blown away.

Cult of Luna attempts to tell a rather fascinating Science Fiction story with Mariner. We lost ourselves in the awe of their grace and thought that maybe the answer is to be found above. The album opens up to a very mellow tune, entitled A Greater Call, to draw in the listener. It evokes a kind of Sci-Fi feel where the listener might imagine a spaceship drifting through space. The imagery suddenly takes a very epic feel as the ambient music is joined by colliding vocals.

The yellow version is the only one that doesn't have "Cult of Luna & Julie Christmas" written along the top left of the front cover. Beyond The Redshift" is a vinyl-only bonus track. Drums and bass recorded by Magnus Lindberg at Tonteknik Recordings Umea, Sweden.

However, as Cult of Luna mentioned, Mariner is an exploration of space, and not an album dedicated to the mechanical setting of the city. The setting becomes increasingly important for this aspect to work, and Cult of Luna pay attention in crafting the appropriate scenery for their work in a more straightforward and welcoming sense with A Greater Call. However, there are mutations that occur along the way, as the synths of Approaching Transition take on a more spacey tone, the processed vocals oozing with an otherworldly atmosphere
