It is considered a drastic change from their previous album Ascendancy by some critics. The album was produced by Jason Suecof and mixed by Colin Richardson.

I have heard better things of ‘Shogun’, but after two good to great metalcore albums ’From Ember to Inferno’ and ‘Ascendancy’, ‘The Crusade’ was a pretty big let down.

Trivium is an American heavy metal band from Orlando, Florida, formed in 1999. After getting signed to Roadrunner Records in 2004, the band has released eight studio albums and over twenty singles. Their latest album, The Sin and the Sentence, was released on October 20, 2017. The band has sold over one million albums worldwide and was nominated for a Grammy for the song "Betrayer" at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019 for the Best Metal Performance.

The Crusade' is different to older Trivium releases, if the writings I've read are true (never heard those two earlier albums). On this album, the band have turned down the 'core stuff and dragged in a substantial amount of thrash metal. About selling out: This album would sell loads more if it was metalcore. The bottom line: Catchy, energetic melodic thrash metal album of the 21st century, that kicks dirt over many old beard thrash metal bands' later albums. However, there's nothing new introduced to the thrash metal genre. But I'm hooked to the album, there's fantastic songs, and that's what matters.

The Crusade was certified silver in the . for sales in excess of 60,000 copies. The album peaked at number 7 in the UK. In the United States, the album debuted at No. 25 on the Billboard 200 albums chart on its release. Trivium was named the best live band of 2006 at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards. 180 gram audiophile vinyl.
