Brackles: Rinse Presents: Brackles. Brackles’ labelmate and sonic peer Roska attracted some mild criticism for his first Rinse Present. lbum in that it leant too close to being a collection of DJ tools, leading him to switch up the styles a bit on his second effort. On Brackles, Rob Kemp has enlisted vocalists for a handful of tracks, scattered across the CD in what could be pessimistically seen as an attempt to avoid similar judgements. More likely, it’s for the sheer love of anthemic female vocals – something that you suspect has been present in Brackles since the halcyon days of 2-step.

Brackles released just one record last year, a two-tracker on Rinse with the promise of a full-length to come. The album splits neatly between vocal cuts (courtesy of Funkystepz and FaltyDL collaborator Lily McKenzie and Terri Walker, the voice of T. Williams' "Heartbeat") and heavily rhythmic instrumentals, and Brackles proves on-point with both.

Although his sound - a rough hybrid of UK garage and funky styles with echoes of dubstep - is very much of the now, there's an obvious love for the classic sounds of 90s UKG which many of his more inexperienced contemporaries lack - assisted by the inspired vocal contributions from Lily McKenzie and Terri Walker
