Life Time is the debut album by American drummer Tony Williams recorded in 1964 and released on the Blue Note label. All compositions by Tony Williams. Two Pieces of One: Red" – 8:06. Two Pieces of One: Green" – 10:40. Tomorrow Afternoon" – 5:35. Barb's Song to the Wizard" – 5:58.

Its debut album was Emergency!, a double album released on Polydor/PolyGram Records in 1969. It was largely rejected by jazz listeners at the time of its release because of its heavy rock influences, but it is now looked upon as a fusion classic McLaughlin left the group and was replaced by Ted Dunbar on its 1971 album, Ego. This album also featured Ron Carter on bass and cello, Warren Smith and Don Alias on percussion, and Larry Young on organ. Williams performed in August 1972 with a new short-lived trio called Life Time Experience, featuring bassist Stanley Clarke and violinist Jean Luc-Ponty. Their performance at the Festival de Chateauvallon, Chateauvallon, France, on August 23, 1972, was captured on film in black & white.

Tony Williams pulls together an interesting cast of players to make an interesting album. Sam Rivers, Gary Peacock, Richard Davis, Ron Carter, Bobby Hutcherson, and Herbie Hancock all play on different songs in trio or quartet forms. This CD is really not a showcase of Tony Williams' drumming, but it's about his songwriting and bandleading.

At age 18, Williams recorded his first album Life Time as band leader under his formal name, Anthony Williams. This recording is completely spontaneous in spirit; full of energy and sensitivity. I have seen this album labeled as free jazz, hard bop, and post bop. As much as I don’t like labels, preferring to let the music stand on its own, I might label it avant garde. One year after recording Life Time, Williams recorded his second album as a leader, Spring ( Wayne Shorter, tenor sax; Sam Rivers, tenor sax; Herbie Hancock, piano; Gary Peacock, bass; Anthony Williams, drums). With Spring, Williams continued to challenge the traditional role of the jazz drummer, creating a wide open head space for the other musicians to create – improvise. Love Song is perhaps the most lyrical composition on this record, but it is characteristic of this recording, complex and adventurous, clear and open, .

Drummer Tony Williams' first recording as a leader (made when he was 18 and still billed as Anthony Williams) gave him an opportunity to utilize an advanced group of musicians: tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Herbie Hancock, and both Richard Davis and Gary Peacock on bass. Williams wrote all four of the pieces and has a different combination of players on each song.
