Does the album have a title? The title of the band’s second new record is, according to Healy, ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’. It follows last year’s ‘A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships’, which together are part of the ‘Music For Cars’ era of the band – one which comprises two records. Do we know what songs could feature on the tracklist? A full tracklist has not yet been revealed, though Healy has been dropping snippets of info in interviews. In a recent interview with Dazed, Healy revealed that a track called ‘Frail State of Mind’, which will feature on the band’s 2019 record, is an exploration of social anxiety set against a UK garage backdrop. The song, he said, is a UK garage, sad, Burial kind of thing about social anxiety, you know, going out.

My Beautiful Laundrette is a 1985 British comedy-drama film directed by Stephen Frears from a screenplay by Hanif Kureishi. The film was also one of the first films released by Working Title Films. Seen now, without that brave-new-world charge, the sex scenes seem a little stagey and the chemistry between Omar and Johnny feels lame-especially in the final scene where the two splash water on each other’s bare chests, as self-conscious as bad actors in a porno. Whenever any of them or Day-Lewis is on the screen, My Beautiful Laundrette springs back to life, a Petri dish of English culture wriggling with thwarted ambition, dreams deferred, and good intentions gone awry. And that certainly makes her a more textured, authentic character, defined not by a clear-cut transformative arc but her constant state of flux.

I contend that this narrative form found new life in queer postcolonial fiction and film in the late twentieth century. These films include The Crying Game (1992), The Wedding Banquet(1993), Fire (1996), Aimee and Jaguar (1999), Borstal Boy, Y tu mamá también, andProteus (2003). My Beautiful Laundrette, however, constructs a decidedly different picture from mainstream British cinema in the 1980s. In contrast to period pieces like Chariots of Fire, state-of-the-nation films like My Beautiful Laundrette portray the unemployment, class tension, and racist violence so prevalent in Thatcher’s England. And, in fact, Kureishi and Frears have stated that they constructed these aspects of My Beautiful Laundrette as an explicit attempt to intervene in the contemporary political situation and to contest Thatcher’s conservative policies and rhetoric.

The renovated laundrette too plays a crucial role. It is a place of comfort for Omar and Johnny, kind of like a home they built and decorated. No character is just a victim of the state. It's a light romantic comedy that lets us see the violence and racism but doesn't linger, making it more powerful when things do happen. As for the relationship between Omar and Johnny, it's portrayed very tenderly (and very sexily, though tasteful). I first saw My Beautiful Laundrette about when it was released and knew friends in the gay community - and have watched the DVD a couple of times since. Those friends saw it more of a championing beacon to their cause and lifestyle and less of a political and economic barometer. Almost no such films were made almost thirty years ago and whilst I'm sure many did just see it as a pro-gay drama, that it was (and remains) a good film is a huge bonus.
