Wendy Matthews carved out a successful solo career as one of Australia's finest vocalists after many years spent backing major Australian acts. After leaving her hometown of Montreal at 17 to busk across the . Canada, and Montreal, she ended up in Los Angeles. In 1983 she sang backup for Glenn Shorrock's solo Australian tour and decided to stay in Australia. She became an in-demand session singer in Sydney, appearing on many commercial jingles. The album, Émigré, earned Matthews the Best Female Artist and Best Debut Single (for "Token Angels") at the 1990 Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards. Matthews was voted Best Female Singer in the 1990 Rolling Stone Readers' Poll.
