Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the United States Appalachian region. The genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Bluegrass has roots in traditional English, Irish, and Scottish ballads and dance tunes, and by traditional African-American blues and jazz.

Bluegrass music began with elements of old time music and traditional music of the Appalachian region of the United States. The English, Irish, Scottish and German immigrants settled in the Appalachian area bringing with them the musical traditions of their homelands. When the word bluegrass itself was adopted to label is not certain but many believe it to be in the early 1950's. It was likely derived from the name of the Blue Grass Boys band formed in 1939 with the great Bill Monroe being its leader. You'll find bluegrass lyrics and chords from Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt, Mac Wiseman, . Crowe, The Stanley Brothers, Jim and Jesse, Doyle Lawson, Lonesome River Band and many others.
Bluegrass: Bluegrass, in music, country and western style that emerged in the United States after World War II, a direct descendant of the old-time string-band music that had been widely played and recorded by such groups as the Carter Family from the late 1920s. Bluegrass is distinguished from the older. It differs from other varieties of country and western music in its driving rhythms and its repertory, as well as in the very prominent place given to the banjo, always played in the three-finger Scruggs style, which is unique to bluegrass. He began to evolve a highly distinctive mandolin style while playing with his brothers Birch and Charlie; and after their group broke up, he formed his own group, the Blue Grass Boys. The band already showed many of the distinctive features of modern bluegrass when in 1945 Earl Scruggs, originator of the revolutionary aforementioned banjo technique, joined it.
