Willie Gary "Bunk" Johnson (December 27, 1879 – July 7, 1949) was a prominent jazz trumpeter in New Orleans. Johnson gave the year of his birth as 1879, although there is speculation that he may have been younger by as much as a decade. Johnson received lessons from Adam Olivier and began playing professionally in Olivier's orchestra. Johnson probably played a few adolescent jobs with Buddy Bolden, but was not a regular member of Bolden's Band (contrary to Johnson's claim)

The American Music Records label was founded in 1944 by William Russell and featured music by New Orleans jazz musicians.

In general, Bunk, who could be quite erratic, was better than his group (clarinetist George Lewis, trombonist Jim Robinson, banjoist Lawrence Marrero, bassist Alcide Pavageau and drummer Baby Dodds) and one can understand his impatience with the players. Lewis is not always in-tune, and Dodds' colorful playing can be distracting. However, the band's joyful ensembles are quite appealing and this melodic music will be difficult for New Orleans revival fans to resist

The New Orleans clarinettist George Lewis was the spearhead of the traditional jazz revival from 1942 until his death in 1969. In this programme, Alyn Shipton is joined by Lewis's friend and protege Tom Sancton to select the highlights from a vast catalogue of recordings. Music includes Bunk Johnson's brass and dance bands, Lewis's trio, quartet and Ragtime Band, and work with such other jazz legends as Lizzie Miles and De De Pierce

Lewis stayed with Bunk Johnson's newly popular band through 1946. This included a trip to New York City, where they played for dancing at the Stuyvesant Casino on Second Avenue. At this time, the band members included Johnson, Lewis, Marrero, Pavageau, trombonist Jim Robinson, pianist Alton Purnell, and drummer Baby Dodds. While in New York, they recorded for the Decca and Victor labels.
