Odessey and Oracle is the second studio album by English rock band the Zombies. It was originally released in the UK in April 1968 by CBS Records. The album was recorded over a period of three months between June and August 1967. The sessions that took place at Abbey Road Studios and Olympic Studios in London. It was received indifferently on release. A single from the album "Time of the Season" later became a surprise hit in the United States in early 1969.
Odessey and Oracle was one of the flukiest (and best) albums of the 1960s, and one of the most enduring long players to come out of the entire British psychedelic boom, mixing trippy melodies, ornate choruses, and lush Mellotron sounds with a solid hard rock base. But it was overlooked completely in England and barely got out in America (with a big push by Al Kooper, who was then a Columbia Records producer); and it was neglected in the . until the single "Time of the Season," culled from the album, topped the charts nearly two years after it was recorded, by which time the group.

Odessey and Oracle can easily stand its ground against any of these works but more important, Odessey and Oracle is a musically distinct album in regards to other contemporary works, something that can be said of the Zombies' work in general. So where to start" The Zombies were in a bit of a bad place in 1967. Odessey and Oracle was the result of frustration. Toiling for years with very little commercial success to speak of and their current recording contract long past expiration, primary songwriters Rod Argent and Chris White sought a new beginning. Set with a new CBS contract and.
About Odessey and Oracle. Released on April 1968, Odessey and Oracle is perhaps the Zombies' most popular album, gaining fast critical acclaim. Its psychedelic, rock and pop themes allowed the album to be held as one of the most influential albums of the 60s, as well as one of the best from that era, considering the entries on multiple best of all time lists (such as Rolling Stone). Four singles were released from Odessey and Oracle: Friends of Mine, Care of Cell 44, Time of the Season and Butcher’s Tale (Western Front 1914)
Although 1968's Odessey and Oracle was released after The Zombies split, its lush and complex sound cemented the group's legacy for generations to come. It's easily among the finest examples of British psychedelic pop, draped in baroque orchestral arrangements, innovative Mellotron, layered harmonies, and Colin Blunstone's soft, breathy vocals
Odessey and Oracle ranks on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time. The Zombies will be playing the entire album on their North American 50th anniversary tour. Did further reading and found out that Odessey & Oracle is still considered one of the most influential albums ever. Having purchased it, I now recognize the depth of writing, incredible creativity and the tremendous reflection of that era, and which remain relevant to listeners today.
