Kevin Morby told NPR about the process of writing City Music: I first wrote this song on the banjo - my initial intent for it to be an instrumental piece - many years ago. Then, one day at band practice, I started playing it on my guitar while we were getting set up and the band jumped in and we developed it together. I had always loved it and wanted to use it for something, and was happy that it found a home on this record. We gave it a real Marquee Moon makeover with my guitarist Meg Duffy’s ‘guitarmonies

Kevin Morby's fourth album, City Music is out June 16 on Dead Oceans. You're in a New York apartment, alone on a warm night, hearing the sounds of the city drift up from the streets. The rumbling din of urban landscapes and the millions of stories that unfold there are, collectively, a kind of "city music. For singer Kevin Morby, it's a sound he celebrates and romanticizes on his new album, appropriately titled City Music. He talks about the exhaustion of living outside the mainstream, his love of The Ramones, and how an imaginary woman named Mabel helped pull the whole album together.

All songs written by Kevin Morby. published by Dr. Benway Music (ASCAP); and Missing Finger Music (BMI). Administered by BMG Bumblebee (BM).

Kevin Morby – City Music. An ambitious homage that sometimes tries to juggle too many ideas at once. City Music marks Morby’s most ambitious album yet, as he expands his palette well beyond his previous work. In addition to the aforementioned sprawling jams, there are the haunting sounds of the nineteenth century organ that open Come to Me Now, the soulful blues and gospel backing choir of Dry Your Eyes, and the apocalyptic hum of Pearly Gates, wherein his character ponders judgment and damnation

City Music is also the new album by Kevin Morby. Full of listless wanderlust, it's a collection inspired by and devoted to the metropolitan experience across America and beyond by a songwriter cast from his own mould. It is a collection crafted using the other side of its creator's brain, the jumping off point perhaps best once again encapsulated by an image. Here, Lou Reed and Patti Smith stare out at the listener," explains Morby. It's no faint praise to say that Kevin Morby's City Music could be a worthy successor almost 50 years later. Lou Reed is not just paid tribute here but literally channeled - Reed left us a few years ago but here appears to wander the streets of his New York still observing and wonders what he should wear at the pearly gates which you could hear him pondering.
