Mario! This 1959 release of twelve Neapolitan songs (recorded in December 1958) was the tenor's first studio album for RCA in stereo, and one of his finest achievements. Franco Ferrara of Rome's National Academy of Saint Cecilia conducted the album (magnificently), and the excellent arrangements were by Carlo Savina and Ennio Morricone.

Lanza was then awarded a scholarship to the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, after auditioning for Serge Koussevitzky. On completion of his scholarship he was drafted and eventually transferred to Special Services, appearing in two shows for the army as part of the 'Winged Victory' concerts created by Moss Hart, billed as 'The Caruso of the Air Force'. Aged 26, Lanza performed at the Hollywood Bowl where he impressed three members of the audience from MGM, Ida Koverman, Louis B. Mayer and Kathryn Grayson  . Many of the songs are about the nostalgic longing for Naples as it once was. The genre consists of a large body of composed popular music-such songs as "'O sole mio"; "Torna a Surriento"; "Funiculì, Funiculà"; "Santa Lucia" and others. Mario Lanza recorded an acclaimed selection of 12 Neapolitan songs on his 1959 album, Mario! Lanza At His Best. The most important native Neapolitan performers of Neapolitan songs in the last few decades include Roberto Murolo, Bruno Venturini, Mario Trevi, Mario Abbate, Mario Merola, Giulietta Sacco, Franco Ricci, Sergio Bruni, Renato Carosone, and Mario Maglione. Murolo is known not only as a singer and guitarist, but also as a composer, scholar and collector of the music; his collection of twelve LPs, released in the 1960s, is an annotated compendium of Neapolitan song dating back to the twelfth century.

Mario Lanza: Original Album Classics. The collection is rounded out by two posthumously released albums, one a lovely collection of hymns and sentimental love songs (and an inexplicable but nicely rendered aria), the other a collection of much loved arias culled from different phases of Lanza's career. Standouts include the heaven storming "The Lord's Prayer," Harpo Marx's beauteous "Guardian Angels," and an operatically stated "Because.
