One is "Sidewinder," an album whose great popularity and commercial success for Alfred Lion's tiny Blue Note Records should not be reason to ignore it. "Sidewinder" is a clever piece by Morgan, with an engaging rhythm and irresistible groovin', danceable quality that distinguishes it from the leaden bossa nova melody of Horace Silver's "Song for My Father," the recording that became the other big hit for Blue Note in the 1960s. The solos on the Morgan album are exceedingly well-crafted, with Morgan himself taking the most adventurous, inventive yet well-executed and satisfying turns on each tune.

Recorded on February 15, 1964 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. All selections Nom Music Inc. - BMI. Catalog numbers: BST 84169 on the labels, 84169 on the front cover and spine, ST-84169 on the back cover. Matrix, Runout (Side A label): BNST 84169-A.

Tom Cat is an album by Lee Morgan recorded in 1964, though only issued in 1980. It was originally released as LT 1058. While lesser known in comparison to The Sidewinder and other albums, it features several of Morgan's contemporary Blue Note recording artists such as McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, and Jackie McLean.

Disc Two: Mr. Kenyatta; Melancholee; Morgan the Pirate. Personnel: Lee Morgan: trumpet; Wayne Shorter: tenor saxophone; Grant Green: guitar; Herbie Hancock: piano; Reginald Workman: bass; Billy Higgins: drums. DelightfuLee: The Life and Music of Lee Morgan. Lee Morgan by Samuel Chell.

Edward Lee Morgan was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on July 10, 1938, the youngest of Otto Ricardo and Nettie Beatrice Morgan's four children. A leading trumpeter and composer, he recorded prolifically from 1956 until a day before his death in February 1972. Originally interested in the vibraphone, he soon showed a growing enthusiasm for the trumpet. Although it was recorded in 1964, the album was shelved for two years, then issued with the original catalogue number 84169. The album reached on Billboard's "Black Albums" chart and on "Pop Albums". All songs composed by Lee Morgan.

This set is one of the finest Lee Morgan records.
