The Snow Goose: A Story of Dunkirk is a novella by the American author Paul Gallico. It was first published in 1940 as a short story in The Saturday Evening Post, then he expanded it to create a short novella which was first published on April 7, 1941

Gallico's "albatross", the snow goose – who braved a "truly terrible storm, stronger than her great wings, stronger than anything", only to be shot down by a hunter – is so heavy with symbolism it should by rights fall out of the sky, into the waiting sea of wishy-washy sentimentality. Indeed, one contemporary critic, called it "the most sentimental story" ever to have been published. Michael Morpurgo cites it as an influence on his much-loved War Horse (it was also, much to Gallico's dismay, the inspiration for a 1975 album by the rock band Camel). Somehow, the simplicity of the snow goose's emblematic burden – love, innocence and loyalty – and of the storytelling itself, creates a lightness that allows the story to soar. The Snow Goose, aka Hunchbacks Need Love Too, is a forgettable and trite short story that easily impressed romance fans or readers looking for sentiment for the sake of sentiment will enjoy. Usually I do this while also listening to Camel's album inspired by the book (or the live version as I did this year), for added flare and mood. It works surprisingly well, being an instrumental album and all. This year I happened to find time to read it on the anniversary of the start of the mass evacuation of Dunkirk, which is the backdrop for the latter half of the book.

Most of them date back to the Victorian period, and render Dumas' evergreen French into English prose that feels old-fashioned and stilted today
