At The Gates - To Drink From The Night Itself flac album

War was essentially a continuation of At the Gates’ Black Album, 1995’s Slaughter of the Soul, whose streamlined version of their sound catapulted the band to popularity. They broke up shortly after its release, but Slaughter lived on in 2000s metalcore, as acts like Killswitch Engage, the Black Dahlia Murder, and Darkest Hour further simplified the record’s sounds. By the time At the Gates reunited in 2007, the long-defunct Swedish group had become one of the most influential metal bands in America  . It may have taken them too long to get here, but on To Drink From the Night Itself, they recapture their heyday while leaving their imitators in the rearview.

My schizophrenic feelings about Night are appropriate, given that it’s the schizophrenic nature of the album that has me all tied up in knots. Ostensibly, what the band has done on this, their second album since reuniting in 2008 and sixth album overall, is attempt to meld the addictively tasty riffage of albums like Slaughter of the Soul and Terminal Spirit Disease with the more jagged, less traditional (pop) songwriting structures of earlier works like The Red in the Sky is Ours and With Fear I Kiss. the Burning Darkness. Which leaves Night in a weird position: it rewards multiple listens, but doesn’t necessarily compel them. So is To Drink from the Night Itself good or bad or somewhere in-between? U. an you ask me again in a year? At the Gates‘ To Drink from the Night Itself comes out May 18 on Century Media.

In 1994, At the Gates released their third album, Terminal Spirit Disease, which was hailed as a breakthrough album. The band continued touring and in 1995 released their most commercially and critically successful album: Slaughter of the Soul, on Earache Records. The album is regarded as their strongest death metal effort, compared to previous albums. This album firmly rooted the band as one of the leaders of the Swedish metal scene, the "Gothenburg sound" of melodic death metal. The band received international attention for the album, gaining them several .  . They entered the studio to begin recording the album in November 2017, titled To Drink from the Night Itself, which was released through Century Media Records on 18 May 2018.

Though largely redundant, To Drink from the Night Itself certainly sounds good and will doubtless inspire the devotion of some old fans. Russ Russell has done a fine job tweaking the knobs to give some polish and depth to the band’s ideas, while ‘The Chasm’ and ‘Palace of Lepers’ offer excitement and interest when the five sterling musicians gel even slightly. Objectively, therefore, the latest At the Gates album cannot be described as poor; simply, given the context of the band that created it, To Drink from the Night Itself must be called a disappointment. The way the orchestration blends into the metal on "The Swarm" left a mark I'll never forget. Then they returned with At War with Reality.
