The Temple Church Choir consists of eighteen choristers and twelve professional choirmen. The choir is considered to be one of the finest choirs in London, a reputation it gained soon after Dr Edward John Hopkins became its choirmaster in 1843. Even though its primary role is to enhance the church's liturgy, the choir has been involved with some groundbreaking projects.

The Temple Church Choir of eighteen boy-choristers and twelve choirmen has in recent years regained the prestige it enjoyed when Sir George Thalben-Ball and Ernest Lough made (in 1926) their world-famous recording of Mendelssohn’s Hear my prayer/O, for the wings of a Dove. The present choir shot back to prominence with the commission and – at the Temple Church itself – the premiere of John Tavener’s all-night musical vigil The Veil of the Temple, ‘Tavener’s masterpiece’ (The Daily Telegraph).

A choir, also sometimes called quire, is the area of a church or cathedral that provides seating for the clergy and church choir. It is in the western part of the chancel, between the nave and the sanctuary, which houses the altar and Church tabernacle. In larger medieval churches it contained choir-stalls, seating aligned with the side of the church, so at right-angles to the seating for the congregation in the nave (of which there would have been little if any in the Middle Ages).
