2002 studio album by Tom Waits. Blood Money is the 13th studio album by Tom Waits, released in 2002 on the ANTI- label. The album contains songs written for the musical Woyzeck, based on the play of the same name by Georg Büchner. The theatrical adaptation was directed by Robert Wilson, with whom Waits had worked on two previous plays: The Black Rider and Alice, both of which resulted in soundtrack albums. The latter was released simultaneously in 2002 with Blood Money. The play premiered at the Betty Nansen Theatre in Copenhagen in November 2000. The song "God's Away on Business" is featured in the 2005 film.
Tom Waits has been milking the concept of the ramshackle apocalyptic carnival for twenty years now, flaunting a keen otherworldly nostalgia and a preoccupation with freaks that transcends the hell out of Harmony Korine's. In the 80s- when everything was measured in 'oodles' and forecasts didn't include a 30% chance of terrorism- Waits rescued himself from his role as a clever lounge slouch by going real weird right about the time he hitched himself to Kathleen Brennan, whose influence has grown with each release (she co-wrote and co-produced both.

Thomas Alan Waits (born December 7, 1949) is an American singer, songwriter, musician, composer, and actor. His music is characterized by his distinctive deep, gravelly voice and lyrics focusing on the underside of society. During the 1970s, he worked primarily in jazz, but since the 1980s his music has reflected greater influence from blues, vaudeville, and experimental genres.
Blood Money is an album by Tom Waits, released in 2002 on the ANTI- label. The album contains songs written for the play Woyzeck, based on the play of the same name by Georg Büchner.
Appropriately, Alice and Blood Money feature songs written by Waits and his wife, Kathleen Brennan, for a pair of stage collaborations with dramatist Robert Wilson: 1992’s Alice, based on the sexual obsessions of the Victorian author Lewis Carroll, and 2000’s Woyzeck, adapted from the nineteenth-century German play about a soldier driven to lunacy and murder . Blood Money is especially grim, a bitter suite about greed and moral bankruptcy. If there is one thing you can say/About mankind/There’s nothing kind about man, Waits snaps in the bleak circus hop, Misery Is the River of the World.
