Ann Hampton Callaway came to jazz through a background in cabaret. The rich-voiced alto has a touch of vibrato which she uses effectively. With a fine rhythm section consisting of pianist Ted Rosenthal, bassist Jay Leonhart, and drummer Victor Lewis, she mines the treasures of the Great American Songbook with a personal touch, showing off with a bit of effective scatting in "What Is This Thing Called Love," and delivering a playful "Comes Love" that is complemented by Wycliffe Gordon's gritty, muted trombone, along with. a suitably dreamy "Lazy Afternoon

Singer Ann Hampton Callaway has that nerve, and then some. Callaway, a performer in the Broadway musical Swing!, composed and sang the theme to the hit television series The Nanny. Her associations include Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops. She was also the invited guest performer for former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev's Youth Peace Summit. Callaway's earthy vocal is comparable to that of Sarah Vaughan. She delivers a cool, swinging take on Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love?," with Rosenthal contributing a charming piano solo and, toward the end of the track, Callaway scatting in dialogue exchanges with Lewis and Leonhart. Guitarist Rodney Jones and saxophonist Teodross Avery join the ensemble for the title song.

The first Ann Hampton Callaway album I purchased was Slow, and I was pleasantly surprised by two things. First, Ann is refreshingly free of the diva-lounge singer-coquette baggage that weighs down so many potentially talented female vocalists. It's just Ann, her voice, and a well-chosen selection of songs. Her rendition of "At Last" is in a class by itself. On this album Ann includes some of her own compositions that undoubtedly will become classics in their own right. Treat yourself to this classy taste of music. You'll be happy you did.
