While Brown's 30-track, 40-track, and even 50-track collections are excellent choices as well, this fine hits package is the best one for Brown neophytes looking for a way in. Covering his prime stretch from the late '50s through the early '70s, 20 All-Time Greatest Hits! includes early R&B milestones ("Please, Please, Please"), epochal '60s sides ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag, Pt. 1"), and latter-day funk classics ("Papa Don't Take No Mess, Pt. 1").
In honor of James Brown’s birthday (May 3), Billboard takes a look at some of his biggest songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The funk legend first entered the Hot 100 with Try Me, which eventually peaked at No. 48 in January 1959. He went on to chart 90 more titles on the list, the biggest of those being his iconic song, I Got You (I Feel Good). It ranks at No. 1 on our exclusive recap of his biggest Hot 100 hits (see list, below). The single spent 12 weeks on the chart, plateauing at No. 3 on the chart dated Dec. 18, 1965. Other top 10 hits included Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag, It’s.
There exist greatest hits compilations that become as important to a career as the best studio album. They can be the beginner’s gateway to an intimidating discography, the end game for a minor fan who prefers nothing more than a concise overview of the artist, or they can act like the perfect mixtape for a super fan. Below are 10 greatest of the greatest, the cream of the crop. It’s no wonder that his biggest hits all seem to be about this very subject which is the beauty of his Greatest Hits album, released in 1975. Ditching chronology, the sequencing of the songs is absolutely perfect; if you didn’t know this was a compilation you’d think it was an intentional concept album about the turmoil of love and relationships. James Brown – 20 All-Time Greatest Hits! Originally released on CD in 1991, James Brown’s 20 All-Time Greatest Hits! recently got a vinyl release in 2014.
