In October 1985 Drivin N Cryin played their first show at Atlanta’s famed 688 Club. The band quickly gained attention for their blistering live shows, and amassed a rabid fanbase in the fertile soil of the late-1980s Southeast music scene  . The following year, Drivin N Cryin released a vinyl-only album, entitled Archives Vol One, with a collection of basement recordings from the years 1988 to 1990.

Mystery Road is the third studio album by the Hard Rock/Southern Rock band Drivin' N' Cryin', released on March 28, 1989, by Island Records. The Washington Post said the album "remains a classic of the genre". Originally, Peter Buck was going to be the producer of the album. He was a friend and . were successful, and they recorded demos together. However, Island Records refused and chose Scott McPherson to be the producer.

Together, these 11 songs connect the dots between the sounds that have shaped Drivin N Cryin’s career since the beginning, mixing together the jangle of folk music, the weirdo textures of 1960s psychedelia, the punky slash-and-burn of old-school rock & roll, and the sweep of Kinney’s southern ballads. Drivin' N Cryin' is an American hard rock/Southern rock band from Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The band was formed in 1985 in Atlanta when Kevn Kinney hooked up with Frank French at Frank's recording studio, "Dragon Path Music" and began working on original songs at night and working at times at Frank's shop "Far East Futon Company" in Atlanta. Kinney also hooked up with Tim Nielsen, who was in a popular band called the Nightporters with drummer Paul Lenz at the time
