Sound System is a box set collection by The Clash released in September 2013.

The Clash is the debut studio album by English punk rock band the Clash. It was released on 8 April 1977 through CBS Records. Written and recorded over three weeks in February of 1977 for a paltry £4,000, it would go one to reach on the UK charts, and has been included on many retrospective rankings as one of the greatest punk albums of all time

The Clash – Sound System. Great things come in crazy packages. In the former list of demands are a live album from the band’s 1981 stand at Bond’s Casino in New York, and an issue of Rat Patrol From Fort Bragg, the moot double album from which Combat Rock was ultimately derived. Clash completists won’t be overwhelmed by Sound System. The Extras discs do contain interesting items: the band’s 1976 Beaconsfield Film School recordings with Julien Temple, and the Guy Stevens first album demos.

Sound System' - in addition to including remastered versions of those core albums in their original configurations ('London Calling' is a double CD, 'Sandinista!' is back to three) - gathers a bunch of live cuts, demos, a DVD, non-album singles, B-sides and rarities from the vaults. It's the most complete audio history of the band ever compiled (and this is a band that has been compiled to death over the past quarter century). They're the reason 'Sound System' feels so substantial. With albums like 'The Clash,' 'London Calling' and 'Sandinista!' as anchors, everything around them - the 1976 demo for 'Career Opportunities' from their second recording session, Bob Clearmountain's extended remix of 'Rock the Casbah' - gain magnitude.

British punk icons The Clash have released Sound System this month, a massive deluxe box set which includes remastered versions of their first five albums plus bonus discs of rarities, singles and demos. The boombox shaped collection also includes a DVD and fanzine while a new compilation double CD titled The Clash Hits Back is also out now. Formed in 1976 and fronted by the hugely charismatic Joe Strummer, The Clash were signed to CBS Records the following year amid the punk frenzy which was now in full media throttle

If anything, Sound System displays a band that carried on a tradition of storytelling that had started with the folk movement. These were musical communiqués in an era before the mass communication that we enjoy and abuse today. Released in 1980 and largely recorded in New York, the album finds The Clash tuning in to the nascent hip-hop scene emerging from the Bronx with ‘The Magnificent Seven’. Remixed, the track dominated The Big Apple’s airwaves as black radio stations put it on heavy rotation.
