Without Feathers (album). Without Feathers featured a major personnel change; with the departure of original lead guitarist Greg Paquet, drummer Dave Hamelin moved to guitar and sang lead vocals on the majority of the album's tracks. It was also the first Stills album to feature keyboardist Liam O'Neil as a full-time member, and was the debut for drummer Julien Blais Contents

Without Feathers, the departure record for the Stills, marks a step in the right direction towards the realm of memorable songs. In the Beginning, the opening track on the album, is the perfect way to start this new direction. The song acts as somewhat of a look back for the band and their inception

On its unexpectedly great debut album, Logic Will Break Your Heart, this Montreal four-piece managed to gracefully update the kohl-eyed new wave drama of bands such as the Psychedelic Furs and Echo and the Bunnymen. With the follow-up, the Stills look to inspiration from a more unlikely source: flannel-wearing, bagpipe-blowing, mullet-wearing '80s Scottish rockers, Big Country. The opening track and first single from Without Feathers, "In The Beginning," sounds like a distant slightly inbred cousin of ATV anthem "Fields of Fire. Coincidence? Perhaps.

The Stills' second album, Without Feathers, was released May 9, 2006, on Vice Records (and in the UK by Drowned in Sound Recordings). Again produced by Van Go, it marked a distinct shift in sound, from the 1980s-influenced post-punk revivalism of the debut to a happier, more Americana-oriented sound, which Pitchfork termed "cheerful and heartfelt". It featured guest appearances from Sam Roberts, Emily Haines (Metric) and Jason Collett (Broken Social Scene). They supported Kings of Leon on. that band's UK spring tour in 2007. On July 20, 2008, the Stills played in Quebec City, opening for Paul McCartney, for the city's 400th anniversary. On February 7, 2009, they played at Nathan Phillips Square as part of Toronto's WinterCity Festival, and again supported Kings of Leon on a tour of Australia and New Zealand in March 2009.
