The Silk Road Ensemble, originally developed at Tanglewood by Yo-Yo Ma, is now ten years old. The group’s latest effort, Off the Map, encompasses myriad musical flavors that hail from beyond the ancient Silk Road trade routes. Gabriela Lena Frank combines two traditional Chinese instruments, pipa and sheng, with a standard string quartet for a South American-inspired piece, Ritmos Anchinos

countries along the Silk Road. Wu Man has performed regularly with the Ensemble since its inception in 2000, recording five albums and touring internationally. In the 2006-07 season, the Silk Road Project partnered with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for a yearlong celebration called Silk Road Chicago, culminating in the 2008 album release Traditions and Transformations: Sounds of Silk Road Chicago Wu Man has also performed multiple times with Yo-Yo. 2009 - Silk Road Ensemble: Off the Map (World Village).

The Silk Road Ensemble. Profile: Multi Cultural Contemporary Jazz/Folk group.

The Silk Road Ensemble is a collective of internationally renowned performers and composers from more than 20 countries. Each Ensemble member's career illustrates a unique response to one of the dominant artistic challenges of our times: to maintain the integrity of art rooted in authentic traditions while nourishing global connections. Many of the musicians first came together under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma at a workshop at Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts in 2000.

The Silk Road Ensemble has recorded six CDs. The group's 2009 CD Off the Map was nominated in the Best Classical Crossover Album category at the 53rd Grammy Awards in 2011. 2001 - Silk Road Journey: When Strangers Meet. 2005 - Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon (released earlier in Japan in 2004 titled Enchantment). 2007 - New Impossibilities. 2008 - Traditions and Transformations: Sounds of Silk Road Chicago. 2017 - The Vietnam War: A Film By Ken Burns & Lynn Novick.

The Silk Road brought Indian culture and later the Islamic faith to Indonesia, and one hopes that the group might someday take up that musically fascinating culture, so well suited to its syncretic way of thinking.

Notes

Over the years, the Silk Road Ensemble has evolved from a group of strangers, brought together by artistic director Yo Yo Ma, into a close-knit band of friends. Off the Map is a testament to that transformation, as the Silk Road Project celebrates its 10th anniversary. Gabriela Frank's Ritmos Anchinos transports us into the Andes, with pipa and sheng imitating indigenous folk instruments. Angel Lam's childhood memories emerge in Empty Mountain, Spirit Rain -- an urban groove of Hong Kong carried by shakuhachi and bass. Creation of the world is at the center of Evan Ziporyn's Sulvasutra. Written for India's great tabla player Sandeep Das, the piece is an explosion of colors -- cosmic particles uniting in the Big Bang, knowledge spreading like fire throughout the universe. Osvaldo Golijov's Air to Air invokes a Sicilian protest song, prayers to Holy Mother Guadalupe and songs from the Christian Arab Easter service, known to millions across the Middle East through recordings by the incomprable Lebanese singer Fairouz. The album features the playing of such renowned superstars as Kayhan Kalhor, Wu Man, Cristina Pato, and Wu Tong, yet it is the Silk Road Ensemble's collective spirit that shines throug, proving great things can happen when strangers meet.
