We Free Kings is a 1961 LP by the jazz t Roland Kirk. His group works through a set of bluesy post-bop numbers, including a highly regarded version of Charlie Parker's "Blues for Alice". The title track, a Kirk composition, is a variation on the Christmas carol "We Three Kings".

While moldy Christmas songs and great jazz seem as compatible as egg nog and Tanqueray, there have been instances where the planets have aligned to create songs that display the best of both genres. Ten instances, to be exact, and you'll find them below. Do you agree? Then post your holiday toast to my list. I will save a special lump of coal just for you. "The Christmas Song" by Dexter Gordon From The Panther! (Original Jazz Classics). Master of the saxophone ballad transforms. Jingle Bells" by Duke Ellington & His Orchestra From Jingle Bell Swing (Columbia/Legacy). Classic Duke sound and great choruses played with typical economy from his sidemen circa 1962. Skating" by Vince Guaraldi From A Charlie Brown Christmas (Fantasy). The melody captures the essence of the title in this masterpiece from the uncanny Guaraldi.

The Mastercuts label's great Classic Jazz-Funk series kicked off in 1991, and like the other volumes released throughout the '90s, the third volume more or less concentrates on the '70s end of jazz-funk as opposed to the form's beginnings during the '60s.

Ella Fitzgerald’s swinging version of the Christmas classic ‘Frosty The Snowman’ was recorded on a hot New York day in August 1960. The song, from an album of festive classics for Verve Records, featured a studio orchestra arranged and conducted by Frank DeVol. Fitzgerald’s voice is as sparkling as pure snow. Kenny Burrell: ‘Away In A Manger’. Kenny Burrell was one of the finest jazz guitarists of the 20th Century and his beautifully tender instrumental version of the traditional carol ‘Away In A Manger’ appeared on his 1966 album Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas. I wrote an original Christmas song! My first time trying this and it was so fun to put together, said Cullum. I tried to write something timeless that could fit right into one of those classic Christmas compilations. I wrote it at the piano at home. The song was arranged by Tom Richards and recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studios.

Off the best Christmas album of all time, A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector, the New York girl group logs this ebullient holiday party jam that will get even Grinch to twist it out on the dance floor. Elvis Presley – "Blue Christmas". Elvis’ Christmas Album is, arguably, the best testament to the King’s artistic interests of all his albums as it masterfully tackles rockabilly, gospel, country, pop, and gospel across its 12 tracks. The most enduring cut, though, is the equal parts woeful and hopeful Blue Christmas. Case in point: Her delightful, swinging take on the holiday classic Winter Wonderland. A necessary addition for every holiday dinner’s playlist. Willie Nelson – "Pretty Paper".
