Bruckner’s Symphony No 4 (‘Romantic’) conjures up visions of mediaeval knights, huntsmen and enchanted woodland, particularly through the prominent use of the horn in the work. C’est Bruckner qui a baptisé la Quatrième Symphonie Romantique et l’on comprend clairement à quel type de romantisme il pensait lorsqu’on lit les descriptions charmantes qu’il fit de chaque mouvement, alors qu’il se lançait dans différentes révisions de l’œuvre – et bien que ces descriptions puissent sembler plaquées après coup.

The Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, founded in 1989 by John Eliot Gardiner, performs Classical and Romantic music using the principles and original instruments of historically informed performance. The orchestra has recorded symphonies, operas, concertos, and other works of Beethoven, Berlioz, Brahms, Gluck, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Verdi, and Weber.

The Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, founded in 1990 by John Eliot Gardiner, performs Classical and Romantic music, using the principles and original instruments of historically informed performance. The orchestra has performed the symphonies of Beethoven and works of Berlioz. Of the latter composer the orchestra and the Monteverdi Choir performed a premiere recording (audio and TV) of the "Messe solennelle" in Westminster Cathedral, London 1993.
