An experimentation in music undiscovered, re-recorded straight from Tape cassette this LP offers a look into an individual mind, desperate to escape convention Low Quality ambience has been hiding in a bedroom somewhere since the early 90s. Synth pad melodies, Casio sk-5 rhythms and collected samples sunken in to a sheen of tape hiss.

A collection of the early, 1989-1990 Carl Craig tracks. There is rhythm – some breaks and early Detroit beats – but the overall feel is tranquilised sci-fi; that narcoleptic, interior techno. And the LP ends with someone (perhaps Carl) exhaling, almost snoring over a Tomita-like ambience. Birds and sounds of the countryside: recorded and produced by eric simms (BBC records, 1970).

Each track manages to flow together while all offering a fresh feel. Producer Saqi is a trumpet player and classically trained composer, the influences of which can be heard throughout The Muse as his trumpet intertwines with the electronic elements of this album in a tidy but intricate structure.

The first of the United State of Ambience series probably features a more stylistically diverse collection of tracks than either of the follow-ups. In fact, at many times the collection seems to veer off into the worldbeat genre, where sampled chants and hand drums take the place of synth pads and computerized sound effects.
