Dies Irae is the fourth and final studio album by Devil Doll, released in February 1996. A concept by Mr. Doctor, it is inspired by the life and music of George Harvey Bone, the poems of Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Brontë, Emily Dickinson and Isidore Ducasse. The lyrics contains multiple references to the poem "The Conqueror Worm" by E. A. Poe (with the entire final stanza of the poem reproduced almost verbatim)

Mr. Doctor recruits the members of Devil Doll through an advertisement with the heading: "A man is the less likely to become great the more he is dominated by reason: few can achieve greatness – and none in art – if they are not dominated by illusion. What makes this such a great movie that it has inspired THE MAN to write the wonderful album that we now know as Dies Irae? Day of Wrath is a black and white movie that was released in 1943 and directed by Carl T. Dreyer and is based on a play from Hans Wiers-Jenssen that was performed in 1909. The play, entitled Anne Pedersdotter, consists of four acts and is based on a true story that took place in the 16th century (although during the 68th minute of the movie the date 1639 can be seen although the real Anne Pedersdotter was burned alive on the stake in 1590).
The music of DEVIL DOLL is something very special and each album of theirs remains some of the most original gothic prog work ever done. This was apparently a fan club only re-release and the sleeve warns that "this music can alter your mental health". wow and then it gets going. Except that I don't really like the band. The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms" is very deep into silly territory, despite the obvious talent and discipline of the musicians involved. Sure, it looks great on paper; spine-tingling orchestral rock that takes the GOBLIN experience to new symphonic heights. I should be loving every over-the-top macabre minute of it, and instead I'm grimacing at the childish vocals ("Man of 1000 Voices"?
