The music that arose, Tropicalia, is bound together more by an ideology of social awareness and the drive to be musically creative than by any single set of musical characteristics. Comparing the songs of tropicalia musicians, it can be discerned that the greatest common bond is in the lyrics, which are well thought-out, keyed to musical events of the accompaniment, poetic, elegant, and above all, socially aware. But tropicalia lasted for only a few years - the style expanded and is better known today as musica popular Brasileira (MPB).

Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis (misspelled Latin for Bread and circuses) is a 1968 collaboration album by artists including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Os Mutantes and Gal Costa. Considered an important record in the history of Brazilian music, it features arrangements by Rogerio Duprat and lyrical contributions from Torquato Neto.

One of the key characteristics of the whole movement was the arrangements of Rogerio Duprat, who was both classically trained and very individual in approach. It’s one of the reasons why tropicália albums have a very particular sound. His presence is truly felt on this one. The album starts with the psychedelic pop of Cinema Olympia. Every Brazilian city had a Cinema Olympia, or similarly-named cinema, in the 60s which would show all the Westerns and John Wayne films

Tropicália was a revolution, a movement of subversion and beauty that swept Brazil in the late 1960s. Veloso’s debut album, with the song Tropicália, kicked it off in earnest, and more artists released their musical manifestos a few months later on the compilation Tropicália: ou Panis et Circencis, which juxtaposed their takes on samba with jarring song structures and experimentation. Gil and Costa both snuck references to spilled blood past national censors, while Veloso paid homage to the revolutionary Che Guevara on the bubbly Soy Loco Por Tí, América (without mentioning him by name).
