Isobel Campbell (born 27 April 1976) is a Scottish singer-songwriter, cellist and composer. Campbell rose to prominence at age nineteen as a member of the Scottish indie pop band Belle & Sebastian, but left the group to pursue a solo career, first as The Gentle Waves, and later under her own name. She later collaborated with singer Mark Lanegan on three albums. Campbell's music has been described as either indie pop, chamber pop or singer-songwriter. In 2003 she released a new album Amorino under her own name. Her next album, 2006's Ballad of the Broken Seas, was a collaboration with former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan and was well received by critics. Her fourth studio album was released on 23 October 2006 entitled Milkwhite Sheets. It brings traditional songs from United Kingdom and songs written by Campbell.

I bring you a tale of the broken seas And I'm drowning in whisky and beer My doctor reports if I don't stop soon I'll drown in an ocean of tears. I looked to you and saw my desire Went from the frying pan into the fire Surrendered to sorrow and was undone Now I'm praying that it won't be long

Ballad Of The Broken Seas - Very Good, Based on 2 Critics. The result of a high-tech tape-trading spree between two artists from opposite ends of the earth, Ballad Of The Broken Seas riffs on a masculine and feminine narrative that is at once timeless and timeworn. With his elemental growl and rural gothic sensibility, ex-Screaming Tree Mark Lanegan sounds like he’s gargled on a hundred miles of bad road, while Isobel Campbell’s otherworldly coo reminds us why she’s Glasgow’s poster girl of twee. As solo performers, both singers fashion evocative set pieces that are often arresting but a bit monochromatic.

Ballad of the Broken Seas is an album released by Isobel Campbell and the first collaboration between her and Mark Lanegan. It made the shortlist for the 2006 Mercury Music Prize and was one of NME's top one hundred albums of the decade. The Mercury nomination provoked some criticism, as collaborator Mark Lanegan is American and the award is for British and Irish artists only. However Campbell wrote most of the tracks and self-produced the album.

Isobel, formally of Belle & Sebastian, has spent the initial part of this year completing works on Ballad of the Broken Seas, the collaborative album recorded with former Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age singer, Mark Lanegan. Although much of the album was recorded with Campbell in her native Glasgow, and Lanegan in Los Angeles, the two actually came together in the studio in . in May to cut a number of new tracks for the release, including a new Lanegan penned song, 'Revolver' and a version of the traditional blues tune, 'St James Infirmary'.

After all, Campbell's voice is all sweet angelic whisper while Lanegan's whisky-and-nicotine rasp sounds like the product of ten thousand nights in a barroom, but somehow these sweet and sour elements come together with striking and impressive results on Ballad of the Broken Seas. Campbell produced the album and wrote the bulk of the material (though Lanegan wrote one song, the moody and satisfying "Revolver"), and while it's no great surprise that she comes up with superb material for herself, she also knows what to make of Lanegan's expressive rasp ("The Circus Is Leaving Town" is as good a performance as he's ever recorded)
