A defining moment in Baker's life came in 1986 when he was traveling on a train in Peru. A terrorist bomb exploded and he was gravely injured, the passengers with whom he had made friends, not so lucky. His journey back to physical, emotional, and spiritual health formed his quiet and passionate view of the world we hear about in his songs.

Sam Baker's album "Say Grace," self-released and out next week, reveals moments of sorrow and joy in the workaday lives of subjects who seem less like folk-song characters and more like people we have known. In Mr. Baker's tales, the personal becomes universal through his keen-eyed writing, supported by well-chosen instrumentation and what might be called spoken-word melodies. Mr. Baker, 59 and a resident of Austin, Texas, comes honestly to his insights.
