Heppenheim (Bergstraße) is the seat of Bergstraße district in Hesse, Germany, lying on the Bergstraße on the edge of the Odenwald. The town is set on the vineyards below the mediaeval Starkenburg (castle). Defining for the townscape, besides the castle, is St. Peter, the Cathedral of the Bergstraße as the big Catholic church is known locally; it was consecrated on 1 August 1904, and is not a bishop's seat.

Bergstraße (district). The coat of arms is split into four quarters. In the top-left it shows the Starkenburg castle, which is one of the major landmarks in the district and a reminiscence of the former Province Starkenburg, a former provinces of the Grand Duchy of Hesse, to which the District once belonged. The cross in the bottom-left derives from the coat of arms of the imperial abbey of Lorsch Abbey, and the lion in the bottom-right is the sign of Hesse

The Starkenburg stands on the 295 meter high Schlossberg and offers a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape. The fort was built in the middle of the 11th century as protection for the Lorsch Abbey. Until 1765, the castle provided protection for the monks and inhabitants of the southern mountain road, after which it was abandoned. The castle decayed over time and only at the beginning of the 20th century began restoration work. Among other things, the old keep was blown up and replaced by a new building
