Playing along with the Borneo horns (saxophone, clarinet), and backed on occasion by drums and ukelele, Pickett has created an album within a uniquely American vernacular. I've been listening to this album for 15 years and I still hear new and great things with every listen. My only complaint is that there isn't much more recorded output from Lenny Pickett than this and the handfull of ToP & SNL records.

Lenny Pickett (born April 10, 1954) is an American saxophonist and musical director of the Saturday Night Live band. In the 1970s he was a member of Tower of Power.

But beyond that, the genius of the Borneo Horns has been mostly lost in the mists of time.

The music eventually came to light on an album Pickett did with a band he would soon form called the Borneo Horns. We had a lot of free time because Bowie didn't like to sing more than two or three times a week. So we had time off and time at the sound check. We made a record (Lenny Pickett with the Borneo Horns, Carthage Records) and did a bunch of traveling. It was an accidental thing. Mostly because of way too much free time on a fancy rock n' roll tour.

Notes

All selections were recorded at Skyline Studios in NYC direct to full track stereo (30 ips). The “tape” used in ‘Solo For Saxophone And Tape‘ was recorded at Grog Kill Studio in Mt. Templar, NY and with the exception of that pre-recording, all information on this album is first generation. Editing and sequencing was done at Horizon Studio in NJ and at Sourcer Sound in NYC. Direct to metal mastering was done at Masterdisc in NYC, and plating was done at Europadisk in NYC.

Skyline sessions were engineered by Paul Wickliffe assisted by Tom Durack. Grog Kukk sessions were engineered by Tom Mark. All editing was done by Paul Wickliffe. Mastering by Bob Ludwig.
