Walk On is a classic "road" album in the sense that its songs largely seem written to or about people who are not present, either because the singer is away from them, he is singing about the past, or they are dead. John Hiatt exploits the resulting feelings of longing, anger, and mourning inherent in that premise, sometimes, as in "I Can't Wait," singing about wanting to be back home, sometimes, as in the odd love song "Ethylene," wishing for a departed lover, sometimes, as in "Dust Down a Country Road," reflecting as in a dream on the past.

Stream John Hiatt’s Back-to-Basics New Album ‘The Eclipse Sessions’. It kind of came together in a serendipitous fashion, Hiatt says of his 23rd studio album, recorded during 2017 solar eclipse. By BRITTNEY MCKENNA - Rolling Stone Country. On October 12th, John Hiatt will release his first album in four years, The Eclipse Sessions, via New West Records. Hiatt recorded the album in Nashville over the course of just a few days in the summer of 2017, which happened to include the full solar eclipse that took place on August 21st. Never one to ignore the good fortune of a successful recording session, Hiatt titled the album after the otherworldly natural wonder. Though Hiatt knew it was nearing time to release new material, he didn’t feel rushed, and went into the recording session with an open mind and a blank notebook. It kind of came together in a serendipitous fashion, he tells Rolling Stone Country.

John Hiatt has been making music since 1974, when his first album, Hangin’ Around The Observatory, made its debut. He’s released multiple albums every decade since, with records dropping at an almost-yearly rate in the 2000s and early 2010s. Then, after 2014’s Terms of My Surrender, he took what constitutes a break in his book, a four-year hiatus
