This was the second single from Belinda Carlisle's second solo album, Heaven on Earth. Her group The Go-Go's went to with their 1981 debut album Beauty and the Beat, but by their third album in 1984 they had lost their touch and were not enjoying each others' company. When they split in 1985, Carlisle remained signed to their label, . which teamed her with top songwriters and musicians, including her Go-Go's bandmate Charlotte Caffey. Her lead single, "Mad About You," set the tone for her solo sound, keeping much of the frothy fun of The Go-Go's but. With that lead in, "I Get Weak" had little chance of failure. The video was directed by the actress Diane Keaton, who also did Carlisle's video for "Heaven Is A Place On Earth.
