And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead. After the success of the first album Source Codes and Tags, Trail of Dead have returned with their latest offering. The lesson of this album-which is by no means unenjoyable in its use of loud-soft-loud dynamics and psychedelic guitar textures-is that the art-rock of the future is apparently not so different from the art-rock of the past. Its easy to imagine the members of this Austin-based act resplendent in ELP-style capes as they sing the bombastic, gospel choir-backed ditty "All White. Then again, the group samples "We Did It Again" by British prog pioneers the Soft Machine at the end of that particular song, as if to say that not only are those who dont know the past doomed to repeat it, but those who do, as well.
As with any epic album, Source Tags and Codes demands an epic closer, and the record's title track delivers masterfully. Both a lyrical and melodic high point, "Source Tags and Codes" captures the complex emotions of the album in a brief glimpse of pure paradoxical beauty. A perfect arrangement of the guitars, piano, strings, bells, and percussion that help make this record so intricate and powerful, the song sounds almost like a bittersweet reunion with old friends. Source Tags and Codes will take you in, rip you to shreds, piece you together, lick your wounds clean, and send you back into the world with a concurrent sense of loss and hope. And you will never, ever be the same.

After relocating together to Austin, Texas, the duo began playing shows as "You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead," eventually adding both the conjunction and the ellipsis to the band's name. The pair also recruited guitarist Kevin Allen and bassist/sampler Neil Busch, thus transforming the group from an indie two-piece into an arty quartet. The elaborate Worlds Apart arrived early in 2005. Despite widespread acclaim for the album, its sales were disappointing, leading Keely to consider disbanding the group. The result, Tao of the Dead, also doubled as one of the most band's most conceptual works to date, with a 16-song set list divided into two lengthy tracks, each of which was performed in a specific musical key.
