Andy Summers’ new album Metal Dog was created after a contemporary dance project failed to mature. The former Police guitarist and Robert Fripp collaborator says he regards the work as avant-garde, while descriptions of the tracks include freaky textures, sunny moods and wild blanket of harmonic distortion. Summers recently told Goldmine: I was looking at a visual artist in New York and I was going to do the music and put it with a dance company. I was very much thinking about dances on a stage, with video and all that

Keep it current, says Andy Summers’ press officer, in our pre-interview briefing. Don’t mention The Police. Not a word about Walking On The Moon. Keep schtum on the spats with Sting. Fine by us. Released on Summers’ own label, Metal Dog is the least commercial and most musically adventurous project in the 73-year-old’s back catalogue.

Andrew James Somers (born 31 December 1942), known professionally as Andy Summers, is an English guitarist who was a member of the rock band the Police. Summers has recorded solo albums, collaborated with other musicians, composed film scores, and exhibited his photography in galleries. Andrew James Summers was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. During Summers' childhood, his family moved to Bournemouth, then in Hampshire, England. After several years of piano lessons, he took up the guitar

Metal Dog' is the stunning new release from guitarist Andy Summers. An all instrumental album replete with razor edge guitar that pushes to the outer edges of generic description. These compositions- exotic as they are - retain a sunny mood, rather than the darkness that is associated with so much loop style music. This feeling is carried further by Summers in the following track Harmonograph which opens with a guitar solo that pierces the honeyed texture like an arrow- eventually falling into a wild blanket of harmonic distortion for a release that is like bathing in warm waters.

Metal Dog shows us an unfettered Andy Summers pulling ideas from weird pedals and all the territories of his vast imagination. It’s an impassioned tapestry of melodies, textures, atmospheres, harmonic excursions, and crazy-ass distortion splatters. Simultaneously strange and compelling, Metal Dog is quite the aural almanac for guitarists unafraid to embark in uncharted waters, yet who are also savvy and commercial enough to promise their mothers, sisters, and babies an enjoyable ride. Before there was Metal Dog, there was a dance-music project. From a sonic standpoint alone, Metal Dog is such a compelling album. Did you find interesting tones and noises and compose from there, or did you develop your harmonic structure and then go, Okay, how can I mess this up ? It was sort of a combination of those approaches.

This is a great album. I would say its more Ambient than Jazz.
