Gene Francis Alan Pitney (February 17, 1940 – April 5, 2006) was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and sound engineer. Pitney charted 16 Top 40 hits in the United States, four in the Top 10. In the United Kingdom he had 22 Top 40 hits, and 11 singles in the Top Ten. He also wrote the early 1960s hits "Rubber Ball" recorded by Bobby Vee, "He's a Rebel" by the Crystals, and "Hello Mary Lou" by Ricky Nelson. Many Moods is Gene's very first LP, and though it didn't chart, almost all the songs were reused on Gene's fourth album, World Wide Winners, which was one of his best selling albums. Musicor had a maddening way of reusing material on album after album to the extent that there were over 20 Pitney albums between 1962 and 1966, creating an unbelievably convoluted discography. Sound quality is excellent, with the essentially self-penned "The Many Sides of Gene Pitney" sounding superb in its original mono format featuring two early Phil Spector productions. Had he not become a major star, Pitney would have become a Brill Building songwriting force to be reckoned with, and MSOGP clearly underscores this.
