Time Life music collections are always solid, well-done affairs, and this one, which features classic early era rock & roll hits from 1962, is no exception. Every track is a hands down winner, and it's always wonderful to hear such timeless gems as Little Eva's "The Loco-Motion," the Drifters' elegant "Up on the Roof," Del Shannon's "Little Town Flirt," and Booker T. & the MG's sturdy and infectious "Green Onions. 1962 was also the year of the twist dance craze, and two immortal selections here, the Isley Brothers'.

The Rock'n'Roll Era was a 53-volume series issued by Time-Life during the late 1980s and early 1990s, spotlighting songs from the early years of the rock and roll era, primarily the pre-Beatles era of 1954-1964. The Rock 'N' Roll Era: 1964. The Rock 'N' Roll Era: 1957. and the whole album is a blast from virutally the last year of the excellent history of American pop music before its impending collapse under the wave of the British Invasion. But this Time Life CD has the best collection of classic rock and roll sounds that I have ever heard on one CD! The year 1963 was such a fascinating transition, with girl groups, surf rock, and soul all emerging as forces that would shape the decade. I grew up listening to "Surf City" and "Surfing USA" but it was so great to also get the more authentic pure surf rock sound in instrumentals like "Pipeline" and "Wipeout.
