This story about multiple factions, spiraling violence and a fool with a different message is only officially a concept album. Canadian rapper Shad tells an imaginary story, longer on reflection than narrative, in A Short Story About a War, but calling it fiction requires as much wishful thinking as it does genre purity. Shad’s vision speaks directly about our current world, and about the perpetual flaws in humanity’s cycles of greed and violence. What could have been a heavy-handed screed turns out to be a engaging sequence driven my smart wordplay and emotional clarity. Shad begins the album with a quick description: Yeah so I wrote this poem about/ About clever men and our violence.

Shad released his third album, TSOL, in 2010. TSOL was a short-list nominee for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize, received a nomination for a 2011 MuchMusic Video Award, and won the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards. In 2018, Shad released his fifth album, A Short Story About a War.
