Upsetters, The - Super Ape flac album

In Jamaica, the album was released under the name Scratch the Super Ape in July 1976 on Perry's own Upsetter label. The album was listed in the 1999 book The Rough Guide: Reggae: 100 Essential CDs.

The album was originally released in Jamaica in 1978 and was the last album by The Upsetters to be released before Perry closed down his Black Ark studio. The album has been re-released on several different labels. In 1998, it was re-issued by Jet Star with five bonus tracks under a slightly different title, The Original Super Ape. The cover was by Lloyd Robinson.

The single was followed by a full-length album of the same name as well as deejay Jah Lion's Columbia Colly LP. Riding this crest of productivity, Scratch then turned to a creation of his own. Super Ape offered a series of the producer's finest 1976 rhythms, from Devon Irons' "When Jah Come" and the Blue Bells' "Come Along" to Romeo's "War in a Babylon" and "Chase the Devil. All are bathed in the distinct, murky atmosphere that was becoming a Black Ark trademark, then served up in the form of dub-like de-constructions.

The mix of sweet female harmonies and alien bass on Dyon-Anaswa is delectably effervescent, though the tingly bells of Psyche & Trim conjure up a humid feeling of darkness. Bird in Hand transforms a classic Bollywood song into a swampy lurch, and Jah Jah Ah Natty Dread rides a runaway drum machine into the deepest recesses of Scratch’s mind.
