Inner City Blues (Grover Washington Jr. album). Redirected from Inner City Blues (Grover Washington, Jr. album)). Inner City Blues is the debut studio album by saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. It was recorded at the Van Gelder Studio in September 1971 and released in 1972 via Kudu Records label. The title track was a cover of the recent hit by Marvin Gaye released in June 1971.

The story behind Grover Washington, J. s first session date as a leader revolves around a sheer coincidence of being in the right place at the right time. The truth is, the date for Creed Taylor's Kudu imprint was supposed to feature Hank Crawford in the soloist's chair

Written by Gaye and James Nyx J. the song depicts the ghettos and bleak economic situations of inner-city America, and the emotional effects these have on inhabitants.
