Osamu Kitajima (喜多嶋 修), also known by the pseudonym Justin Heathcliff, is a Japanese musician, producer, composer, and multi‑instrumentalist. After studying the classical guitar and the piano as a child, in the 1960s Kitajima was a member of his cousin Yūzō Kayama's band The Launchers.

Osamu went in more "New Age-y" directions for a long time after this; I found that music pleasant but much less compelling. This album stands out as its own style. The short version of the title track (probably a remix of "Benzaiten (Reprise)") blends numerous Japanese percussionists with western funk-very catchy.

I found it on YouTube and instantly wanted it, after I heard the whole thing for the first time. I'm very glad to see that "Psychedelic Sounds International" re-released this album, but it would have been cool if the CD had a similar appealing print, like the US re-release by "East Quest Records". The booklet is more like a flyer. But those small details are not really important.

Osamu Kitajima – Benzaiten (Merlins Nose Label Group). World music and ethno sounds with an obvious Japanese origin meet progressive rock and psyche. Not sure what Osamu Kitajima and his band intended when they recorded this record but I am certain they achieved it. The cool aspect of Benzaiten is the rocking guitar which keeps the whole album together. Must be the Japanese pendant to German acts like AMON DÜÜL II, EMBRYO and GURU GURU. Well, there is definitely some truth in this comparison. Anyway, this album will enchant you! By ‘Sir Lord Doom’/2016.
