Pomegranates is a 2015 album by Nicolas Jaar, intended as an unofficial alternate soundtrack to the 1969 film The Colour of Pomegranates. Mark Richardson, writing for Pitchfork Media, stated that "there are long stretches, particularly in the early going, where it's more of a sound piece than what is usually described as 'music', but the album's second half contains some of Jaar's loveliest tunes.

Pomegranates, an alternate soundtrack to Sergei Parajanov's 1969 avant-garde film The Colour of Pomegranates, is the latest excursion by the producer Nicolas Jaar. It's one of his most unusual projects to date, and often sounds like Jaar's version of musique concrète, but the second half contains some of Jaar's loveliest melodies. Pomegranates, an alternate soundtrack to Sergei Parajanov's 1969 avant-garde film The Colour of Pomegranates, is the latest excursion by the producer Nicolas Jaar. Nicolas Jaar has had the kind of career only possible in the digital era. After putting out a few singles, he released his one and only solo album, 2011's Space Is Only Noise, when he was 21 and still a student at Brown University.

Earlier this year, Nicolas Jaar created an alternate soundtrack to the 1969 avant-garde Soviet film The Colour of Pomegranates, which was directed by Sergei Parajanov. He explains that some of the music was created before he saw the film

Nicolas Jaar releases new album Pomegranates for free. The new LP, titled Pomegranates, was adapted from Jaar’s re-scoring of the Soviet film The Color Of Pomegranates which he released earlier this year, however he is quick to note in the downloaded materials that this version of the album does not synch up with the movie. The download comes with some photographs, a lengthy note from Jaar talking about the album, and a pictures of record labels that strongly hint at a future vinyl release.

What is Nicolas Jaar up to? In the past few weeks, he’s let slip two new 12-inch EPs and one alternate soundtrack reworked into an LP. He also pressed a concert DVD of his side project, Darkside, which called it quits last year after one excellent album and a string of some of the best live performances in recent memory. Jaar makes excellent work, but he’s rarely content to sit in one place for long. By contrast, the Pomegranates floats by in impressionistic shades. According to the album’s liner notes, Jaar found a unifying point to a swath of unused music when he stumbled upon the experimental Soviet film The Color of Pomegranates. The producer had already planned to call his next collection Pomegranates, and the film locked into the moods he had been conjuring in his recent work. He shaped the music to fit the movie and ended up making an album in two days.

Notes from artist regarding release:

A the beginning of 2015 my friend Milo heard some of these songs and told me about the film. I watched it and was dumbfounded. I felt the aesthetic made complete sense with the strange themes I had been obsessed with over the past couple of years. I was curious to see what my songs sounded like when synced with the images, which turned into a 2-day bender where I soundtracked the entire film, creating a weird collage of the ambient music I had made over the last 2 years.

The film gave me a structure to follow and themes to stick to. It gave clarity to this music that was made mostly out of and through chaos. It also gave me the balls to put it out… I wanted to do some screenings but the guy who owns the rights to the film only wants the original version of the movie out there. I can’t blame him, I’m sure Paradjanov wouldn’t want some kid in NY pissing all over his masterpiece and calling it a soundtrack! I’ve listened to it a couple of times without watching the movie and I think it stands on its own. Or at least I hope it can!

The album and film work powerfully when played in concert with one another, I think Sergei Paradjanov would rejoice.
