The album, which also featured a 19-year-old Sonny Rollins, is one of the best jazz albums by a pianist; it tore up the rule book and served as a memorable introduction to a phenomenal musical talent. Key song: ‘Bouncing With Bud’. 47: Weather Report: Heavy Weather (Columbia). The Incredible Jazz Guitar O. as his third album but the one that truly put the Indianapolis guitarist on the jazz map. Montgomery’s sidemen (pianist Tommy Flanagan, Modern Jazz Quartet bassist Percy Heath, and his brother, drummer Albert Montgomery) offer sterling support on a varied selection of original tunes (‘Four On Six’, ‘West Coast Blues’ and ‘Mr Walker’), covers (Sonny Rollins’ ‘Airegin’ and Dave Brubeck’s ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’) and standards (‘Polka Dots And Moonbeams’).

High-end collectable records can be a good investment, though some artists have drifted out of fashion and proved a poor investment. It is much smaller than the high-end rock pop classical reggae singles collector tribes. Outside of the jazz world, the truly rare and expensive records are associated with rock and pop history. For example, a test pressing of a Beatles recording that was never issued, only one copy exists, owned by Paul McCartney, valued near £1m.

I decided to take the Sarah record off the list and just concentrate on instrumental records. Perhaps I’ll do the vocals at a later date. Having seen Evans many, many times in the late 1960s and through the 1970s, this album captures him extraordinarily well, and it is also very well recorded. 2. Cannonball Adderley, Live at the Lighthouse. Had a hard time choosing between this and the Live in San Francisco album (didn’t want to include two albums from the same artist on this short list), but this was the album that really opened my eyes to jazz with the opening Sack O’ Woe so it will always have a special place in my heart. 3. Roland Kirk, Volunteered Slavery.
