The mixed-gender adult British choir the Cardinall's Musick, whose performances have a bit more muscle than those cultivating the pure cathedral style, has released an unusually strong group of albums devoted to the music of Thomas Tallis.

Duration 67:39 Recorded in Fitzalan Chapel, Arundel Castle, on 20-22 February 2013 Cover illustration: The Queen Mary Atlas (c1555-1558) by Diogo Homem.

Performer: The Cardinall's Musick/Andrew Carwood. As one would expect from Andrew Carwood’s experienced group, these performances are professional and musical. The chants are superbly sung, the pace is well judged if a little brisk, and the expressive dissonances glide perfectly together. The recording itself is very skilled and there is no hint of muddiness in the passages in low pitch

Composer: Thomas Tallis, Anonymous Conductor: Andrew Carwood Orchestra/Ensemble: Cardinall's Musick. Well-established groups such as The Tallis Scholars and The Sixteen already have an impressive discography of this music and more recently they have been challenged by younger performers such as The Cardinall’s Musick. The central work on the new CD, the Christmas-tide Mass, Puer natus est nobis, has been more recorded than any Tallis composition except the 40-part Spem in alium. Here, too, plainsong figures, this time as the cantus firmus, the music on which the polyphonic structure is founded.

It seems a miracle that Thomas Tallis was able to survive to the ripe old age of 80 or so during the most turbulent period of English history when the monarchy veered back and forth between Catholicism and Protestantism, successfully piloting his career through those treacherous waters without foundering on the rocks of religious dogma. His ability to trim his sails to the prevailing winds is evident from Andrew Carwood’s clever programme of Antiphons, Mass, Anthems and Psalms

The Cardinall's Musick, Andrew Carwood (conductor). Not long ago neither Tallis's Missa Puer natus est nobis nor his antiphon Ave, Dei patris filia could have been recorded: the manuscripts for some of the voice-parts were missing and were believed to be lost for ever. Anonymous - liturgical. Ordinary of the Mass.

Andrew Carwood's notes are excellent and the presentation is attractive. This is a very worthy addition to the Cardinall's Musick's discography, and I can recommend it very warmly. The programme centres around the three surviving movements of Tallis's mass Puer natus est nobis, composed during Mary's reign. It is a magnificent, sonorous work for seven voices, so it is richer in texture than much of his work. Here it is framed by a fine variety of shorter works, some very well-known like Videte miraculum, for example, and others much less so like the very early Magnificat setting.
